Veganism - How Far Have We Come?


In an article of the magazine’s special edition The World in 2019, The Economist’ correspondent John Parker declared 2019 the “year of the Vegan”.
Veganism has caught on quite the wave. The American and European markets saw a rise in various vegan related markets – acquisitions of vegan product companies, increased food  options at various restaurants and vegan lifestyle products.
PETA has also released their version of a ‘vegan certificate’. This helps customers identify products that
are vegan and meeting standards set by established organizations.


2019 has seen quite the rise in veganism in India. Here’s 5 things that happened that promises 2019 to
be the ‘year of vegan’


1. INCREASED VEGAN FOOD OPTIONS :
Veganism is the fastest growing food trend in India. People are curious about it. There are
various vegan cafes in metropolitan cities that are joining the wave. Many restaurants are
adding vegan options on their menu to cater to their customers needs. Vegan meats are gaining
a cult following , it is now available at various stores and food e-stores.


2. INCREASE IN LIFESTYLE PRODUCTS :
From having vegan protein to clothes and shoes made without animal suffering, its all gaining
momentum. As Veganism is not just about the food , it’s a lifestyle. Various start ups are now
following the wave and introducing variety to a new and challenging market.


3. HIGH END BRANDS INCLUDING SUSTAINABLE OPTIONS IN THEIR CATALOG :
From Zara’s Join Life collection to Katy Perry’s shoe company the vegan trend is serving us
looks. A high number of sustainable clothing brands are using this opportunity at attract
customers and get some serious footing in a growing market.

 


4. ACQUISITIONS AND FUNDING OF VEGAN PRODUCT BASED COMPANIES:
Entrepreneurs set out to change the world- this statement is often said to be farce.But Indians
are busting the myth with their environment friendly approach to business in its true sense.
For eg: Wegan Foods a Mumbai based food startup has gained undisclosed amount of funding
from UAE princess, Sheika Arwa Al Qassmi for its Dairy Free cheese.


5. MANY VEGAN ECOMMERCE MARKETPLACES WENT LIVE :
From Ecotrunk to Myntra, many online market places are climbing the bandwagon to sell
ecofriendly and vegan products. This creates a demand and a great sales channel to the vegan startups looking to reach a higher customer base. 

 

 

Being vegan is not just easier now,but even aspirational with many prominent vegan celebrities.As
always, the entertainment industry is in the forefront of trendy diets , with Miley Cyrus ,Ellen
DeGeneres , Liam Hemsworth and Virat kohli all counting as long term vegans.
